Gifts that Give Back 2017
Every year I look forward to writing this post. It’s one of my favourites because it is a very practical way to bring more meaning to Christmas and to intentionally choose to invest our resources in a way that blesses both our loved ones through thoughtful gifts and also supports the hard working artisans with fair and dignified employment. Beyond that these gifts also care for the earth through eco-friendly projects that are produced sustainably and with a minimized carbon-footprint to help prevent climate change. Best of all, these carefully curated gifts give back to worthy charities doing incredible justice-driven work in the world.
This year my gift guide is extra special, because every single one of the items featured can be found at Justly Market, my new venture designed to make ethical shopping easier for everyone.
So if you are looking for sustainable, ethical gifts to thrill your loved ones while also empowering others, then this is the gift guide for you!
Plus, you can use the discount code ‘MISSTARATENG10’ for 10% off all items below throughout the month of December. There is limited supply for a few of the collections and shipping deadlines are coming quick so don’t wait to place your order!
This collection of all natural, organic, fair trade and high quality children’s heirloom clothing is both timeless and whimsical. The entire collection is locally made in Abbotsford, BC and specializes in harm-free fashion that respects both humans and the planet. The heirloom garments are made with quality in mind so that you can look back on these precious memories with your little ones and then pass on the love to others when your children are ready to grow into the next size.
I’m always incredibly impressed when a company gets to zero-waste status but when a company is able to boast a carbon-negative status…that’s next level! ChopValue has these such bragging rights and is innovation and design for the future. Inspired by Vancouver’s love of Asian cuisine, ChopValue recycles bamboo chopsticks from the many popular sushi restaurants in the city and gives them new life by creating quality bamboo furniture and gift items.
For example, this set of coasters is made using 300 recycled bamboo chopsticks and this geometric shelf is a stylish way to showcase special items while making a statement about environmental responsibility.
If you have a coffee lover in your life, no set of coasters would complete without something warm and caffeinated to go along with it!
Good Coffee is changing the world, one coffee bean at a time! Its beyond fair trade coffee that reinvests 25% percent of its profits back into the communities where the beans are grown through innovative projects for education, health-care and sanitation.
If you’re not a coffee addict but still want something warm in your cup, these teas are the ones you’re looking for. I am a tea connoisseur and New Moon Tea Co has some of the best loose leaf teas I’ve ever tried. Every tea blend you’ll find at Justly Market is small batch, hand-blended, organic and fair trade using sustainable, agricultural practices. There are tea blends for preventative health and artisan teas that contain no additives. They’re delicious and easily one of our best sellers!
If you’re looking for soft, whimsical, fair-trade and bamboo clothing for your children, Lil Haven Co is what you want. Both my kids and most of their friends are decked out in these trendy and comfortable threads! There’s a wide variety of styles, colours and sizes to choose from so you’re certain to find what you want. Plus….they’re so cute, I mean just look at these photos!
I know there’s a lot of extra photos here but with the cuteness and the cookies, I just had to share!
Small batch, minimalist women’s clothing and handmade in the Fraser Valley of BC, this collection is easily becoming a regular in my personal wardrobe rotation. Each piece is made with 100% natural, sustainable fibres and boasts effortless, elegant style that you can wear anywhere and in any season.
Sometimes I wonder if we really need to generate new items when we can already find everything we need here! This ring is proof of that; A modern, vintage beauty…upcycled to perfection, this stylish spoon ring is adjustable and one of a kind.
Every special holiday deserves a special treat! But these special Glow hearts and truffles are guilt-free that are certified organic, fair trade, refined sugar-free, dairy-free, gluten free, soy-free, GMO free and made without preservatives, soy, corn or dairy.
Only the good stuff, none of the bad.
If you’re needing a gift for a person who has everything, this is it. Konisa specializes in sustainable wood design by creating functional and stylish products for your living, working and learning environments. From tech gadgetry to home decor and even travel and business accessories, each piece is made with reclaimed natural wood that are smart, convenient and modern. Perfect stocking stuffers for entrepreneurs, jet setters and anyone looking to make a stylish, sustainable statement!
Timeless, effortless, heirloom beauty… Pemberley is the epitome of slow, cherished fashion. Made with quality craftsmanship, durable materials and all natural textiles, each dress is inspired by classic European style and meant to be loved through special occasions and during care-free play.
Easily one of my favourite jewelry companies, Senhoa’s mission is to combat human trafficking and sexual exploitation through empowerment, advocacy and prevention programs. This gorgeous jewelry provides safe and dignified employment for at-risk women and survivor artisans . By purchasing and wearing Senhoa, consumers raise awareness against modern slavery and are directly impacting the lives of women in a positive way!
The Lotus Flower is not only the namesake of Senhoa, but has internationally become a symbol of hope for human trafficking survivors. A lotus flower grows in muddy water and rises above the surface to bloom with breathtaking beauty, untouched by its impure surroundings.
Finally, before you head out the door for all your holiday parties or to simply take a stroll in the winter wonderland, be sure to put on something warm and ethical. Focused on quality, sustainable fashion, the Etnica alpaca line is ethically sourced and produced in family-owned workshops in Peru where artisans are paid a fair and dignified wage. This natural fibre wool of baby alpaca wool has been named the finest in the world due to its longevity, soft texture, hypoallergenic features, and thermal capacities.
Baby alpaca wool is the wool that results from the three first shearings of the alpaca’s coat. Compared to other luxury materials, baby alpaca wool is rarer than cashmere, and warmer than sheep’s wool. Wear it for a season but keep it for a lifetime, because this whole collection is meant to be loved again and again and again.
