Transitioning to Two Kids

My kids are 26 months apart and I love being of a mom of two babies, but every day there is a little bit of chaos  sprinkled in amongst the sweetness. And some days, its the other way around! Yet no matter how crazy it gets, I wouldn’t trade it for anything; in fact, just a few hours after Skyana was born I was already telling Chris how much I’m looking forward to doing it all over again with a third baby. (Yes, I am crazy like that.)

But this excitement doesn’t mean that every moment has been easy or even necessarily fun. There’s been a lot of hard days and various challenges we have had to conquer. Even at 10 weeks old, Skyana is changing so much and growing in her skills each day; we’ve already left the newborn stage behind and we are constantly kept on our toes as things change. What worked with Chayton doesn’t always work for Skyana, and what works for Skyana now might not be as interesting to her by next month or the month after.

It may sound like odd advice but we’re learning to set the bar low with our expectations. Some days we make it to toddler gymnastics, do crafts and practice our Mandarin lessons…other days we watch Netflix, eat fast food and live in our pajamas. Balance, right?

It’s okay to accept that things might not go as your originally planned and its important to know your limits for what you can actually handle and what you can’t.

So we’re just taking it moment by moment, day by day. And we are making it all possible due to the incredible support that we’ve had from family and friends every step of the way. I can’t say this loud enough: find yourself a village and love them hard! Parenting cannot happen on your own; its better for all of us when we raise children in a community.

One of the other ways that we have made life easier the second time around is that we know what we actually need and use for babies, and we let go of any advice we’ve been given that just doesn’t work for us!

It’s very freeing to live without the burden or pressure that we can feel from other parenting styles that may or may not work for us. As a first time parent I was easily overwhelmed by wading through everyone’s opinions. As a second time mom I know my family and what works for us. As long as my babies are loved, fed, happy, healthy and held… everything else is just gravy!

It also helps to know what I can trust. There are a lot of baby products we use on a regularly basis. Knowing that a company is eco-friendly, non-toxic, sustainable and ethical means that I can rest assured that my babies are safe; and that is one less thing for this mama-of-two to worry about!

One company we received gifts from has easily become a favourite of ours. Finn + Emma carries clothing, toys and blankets made from 100% organically grown cotton, free of toxic chemicals and fully fair trade in its manufacturing.  I feel good about putting our babies to bed in their pajamas or letting them play with their toys because I know there is nothing harmful touching their skin.

Since babies and toddlers sleep large portions of the day, it’s important that they aren’t being impacted by harmful materials 12 of the 24 hours each day. Our crib mattress and bedding is fully organic, so it only makes sense that our little one wear pajamas that are too.

Plus, being fair trade means that I am also caring for those who made our clothes and toys. Personally, I love that Finn + Emma focuses on the social and economical independence of those who they hire. They pay fair trade wages and ensure that the workers, mostly women and mothers, are able to provide for their families through their employment. And you all know this is something incredibly important to me.

So all in all, not a lot of our life has changed since Skyana joined us…and yet at the same time, everything has changed! We still have the same lifestyle and values that we did before two babies, but now we’ve simply learned how to do things a bit differently! Life is certainly full, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
