Little known fact about me: my university education was focused on teaching secondary school education. I absolutely love teaching young people in the classroom and witnessing their world open up as they expand their dreams and grow their confidence and capabilities.
It is because of this that I firmly believe there are few things in the world more powerful than education.
Education changes lives. And yet to many of us in the western world, we take our education for granted, while to this very day it is still a necessity restricted to many in the developing world.
One Girl Can is addressing this need by funding scholarships for girls so they can receive quality education in Kenya.
“Educating women is the only known cure for ending poverty,” says Lotte Davis, founder of One Girl Can.
Last year the One Girl Can event raised $100,000 in one night and this year, they aim to double that with funds goes to help build dormitories and washroom facilities in Ganze Girls Secondary School in Kenya, located in an area with the highest dropout rate of girls due to poverty and cultural norms that favour education for boys over girls.
And you are invited to be part of this critical change.
“In one short evening, we can raise enough money to effect sustainable change in literally hundreds of lives, and slowly start to shift the needle on gender imbalance and poverty in Africa, ” emphasizes Lotte Davis.
The event is taking place at 6pm on Thursday, April 21 at The Imperial (319 Main Street, Vancouver). Tickets are $65 each and include one complimentary drink, an AG product gift bag valued at $68 and appetizers from award winning No Fixed Address Social Catering. Plus there will be an amazing auction including two safari trips to Tanzania and South Africa, a 10-person cruise and dinner on a 1954 classic mahogany yacht, dinners at top Vancouver restaurants and more!
But most importantly, you are giving the gift of open possibilities to these special, worthy girls in Kenya. You are invited into the movement that is transforming communities all across the nation of Kenya, and rising up a future of strong, female leaders who are investing their education back into making their country a better place.
We all win when girls are educated.
