My heart longs to know, what is beauty? Can it be defined by size, shape or style? Can it be held or captured, felt or embraced? Can we see it with our eyes or must we feel it with our hearts?
I believe that beauty is more than an emotion or an idea. Beauty must be experienced to be fully known. Beauty is the way we greet one another, when we choose to be compassionate, gracious and kind. Beauty is seeing the humanity in the human and the family in the stranger.
Beauty is intentionally living for the future, in seeing the generation beyond the now. Beauty is raising up strong, confident and empowered leaders who give compassionately of themselves for the betterment of their community. Beauty is service and integrity; the using of your talents, resources and creativity to leave the world better than you found it.
Beauty is sisterhood: the circle of women supporting women, breaking the lie that we must cut one another down to get ahead and instead beauty lives with the conviction that there is room for all of us to stand in the sun. Beauty is not threatened by the confidence of another but rather knows that her success is my success. Our legacy is woven with those who paved the way before and intertwined with those who carry on after.
Beauty knows oneself; she is vulnerable with her shortcomings and willing to cut away the briar to grow the rose.
Beauty is patient, trusting the process that carries her forward. Beauty gives grace for she understands the flaws within us all and waits for the space when the good moves in.
Beauty speaks up against oppression, comforts the lonely wanderer and readies the sails for the day of freedom. Beauty hopes, trusts and endures because she believes that true love is worth fighting for.
Beauty sees a brighter day and more hopeful tomorrow. She intentionally invests her seeds into nurturing forth this reality.
When all is set and done, at the moment of sunset, beauty looks back on her life and knows the legacy left behind will not be broken.
Because it was never about size, shape or style but rather the calloused hands of the gentle heart that never gave up and always fought for love.
