Brittany’s Birth Story
I was connected with Tara through a mutual friend on Facebook early on in my first pregnancy. I was seeing a midwife for my prenatal care, but wanted to have someone at the birth who would remember and support all my decisions for my labour and delivery, and the initial care of the baby. Throughout my pregnancy Tara was always available as a resource and confidant anytime I needed, and visited me in my home many times; she provided my with helpful exercises to keep baby in the right position for birth, and consistently checked in to see how I was feeling. I really felt like she knew exactly what I wanted my labour experience to be like, and would be an advocate for my decisions. When I did go into labour, 4 days overdue, she heard me through a contraction over the phone and was able to coach me through breathing through it. She quickly came to my home (even though she lived over an hour away) and as soon as she arrived both my husband and I benefitted from her calm energy.
My midwife had checked me less than 2 hours prior to Tara arriving and found me to be at only 1 cm dilated, and had warned me it would be hours yet before I progressed enough to go to the hospital. However, when Tara arrived and saw me contracting she recommended we call the midwife back and head to the hospital. It was a good thing she did; when we arrived at the hospital I was already dilated to 5 cm, and delivered only 2 hours later. My contractions were intense and close together, with no breaks in between. Tara coached me through contractions, reminding me to breathe and let my body work as it needed to. I could tell my husband really fed off of Tara’s calm energy, which allowed him to give me strength. When it came time to deliver, the baby’s heart rate decelerated and I knew that it wasn’t good. Tara was there to help me focus and keep calm and coached me through pushing. With only 12 minutes of pushing I gave birth to a healthy baby boy. After the delivery, Tara was able to cut the umbilical cord, and then helped me with baby’s first feeding.
After we were released from the hospital, Tara came to my home to check on the baby and I. She brought fresh homemade muffins and an herbal sits bath. She made it clear that she was available if I had any concerns or questions. I truly felt that having her as part of our birth experience was the best decision my husband and I could’ve made. She was was a calm presence and exactly the support that we both needed. I would recommend her to any woman, without hesitation.
