Easter Monday, 2013…My first hunting trip! To be honest, I had no idea what I was doing but the day was gorgeous, the snow was melting on the mountains, spring bear was open and my boyfriend and best friends were by my side!
Chris and I had been talking (everyday) about marriage. We knew we would be getting married because we had already been to the jewelry shop. I figured that a proposal might be happening sometime on Easter Sunday but when Monday morning rolled around and we packed the jeep for a hunting trip, I figured it would be another weekend. There is very little in the world that interrupts Chris on a hunt!
The mountains were gorgeous and the clean, spring air was invigorating in my lungs. We drove the jeep right up to the top of the mountains overlooking the valley near Harrison Hot springs, BC.
Chris told everyone to keep an eye out for black bears and I meticulously scanned every bit of forest that I could see. I was going to impress this boy and be the one to find the bear! After a while we got out of the jeep, carried our packs and kept hunting on foot.
Chad and Donna went one way while Chris and I took off in the opposite direction. We followed animal tracks, went up and down trails, hiked through a ravine and finally came around the corner to an open clearing on the edge of the mountain cliff.
It was around this time that I noticed our friends, Chad and Donna, hiding in the bushes with their cameras. I started asking Chris what was going on and instead of explaining, he held my hand and led me up a trail of flowers to the top of a cliff…and got down on one knee!
The ring that we had bought hadn’t yet come in, so Chris carved me a beautiful little ring made out of Moose Antler. While it didn’t sparkle, it was made especially for me by the man I love! It totally represented us and I felt very Canadian wearing it on my finger!
One little question that I’ll remember for the rest of my life! I didn’t catch a bear on my first hunting trip, but I did go home with a fiance…and I’m happy with that!
*** PS. I should mention that Chris is VERY proud that got me, a Former Miss Canada, proposed to while wearing camo and a shot gun on my shoulder!
