Miss Canada Lends Her Voice to a Public ‘Call to Action’ on Modern Day Slavery
Tara Teng Hosts ‘Freedom Week’ Events in Langley, BC on March 12
Vancouver, B.C. – Newly crowned Miss Canada Tara Teng is calling on Vancouver area residents to participate in a week of awareness and call to action on modern day slavery called Freedom Week that will be taking place from March 6 to 13, 2011. “Freedom Week’s goal,” says Teng, “is to raise awareness and call people to respond to the 27 million individuals in our world today who are enslaved”. Freedom Week will have various events throughout this week.
“Modern day slavery is, in a nutshell, forced captivity and exploitation of another person. Most victims are children and young women who are forced into the sex trade by criminal organizations,” says Teng. “In Canada, thousands of these people are being victimized in this way every single day.”
“A significant way to show your support of ending this situation would be to attend our Freedom Week Rally and March to end human trafficking taking place on Saturday, March 12th,” says Teng. The rally and march will be held at 11am at Douglas Park in downtown Langley (20517 Douglas Crescent).
“If I can use my opportunity as Miss. Canada for anything, it would be to speak and act on the injustice of modern day slavery,” says 22-year-old Teng. Teng has already been using her Miss BC platform to speak wherever possible about her passion for social justice and for human rights.
Freedom Week Co-Leader Todd Hauptman says that while slavery is not a new injustice, the brutality and gross magnitude should shake everyone up. “While this is a global injustice, we must respond locally and that’s where Freedom Week comes in to provide a way for people to act,” says Hauptman.
Teng and her team are united in the message that ‘slavery is bad and we want it to stop.’ Freedom Week was established by a group of committed and radical modern day abolitionists lead by Teng, Miss Canada, activist Hauptman and team of passionate young modern day abolitionists.
Teng and the Freedom Week team have the ambitious goal of ending human trafficking in their lifetime. “We are so excited about Freedom Week starting a movement in Canada to end modern day slavery in our lifetime,” says Teng. “Please stand with us on March 12th in Langley.”
